Tomb of Homer

Tomb of Homer

Ios is proud to host on its land the tomb of the great ancient poet Homer. This is not only an oral tradition, but is also proven by the texts of ancient authors (Herodotus, Pausanias, Alcaeus, Skylax, Strabo, Eustathius, Pliny). It is also known that Homer’s mother came from Ios. The tomb of Homer is located on the hill of Psathopyrgos, above the bay of Plakotos, on the north-eastern side of Ios, with an amazing view of the Aegean and an amazing route.

It is a small square space built with stone and marble and a marble plaque, flanked by two verticals. It is certainly not the original plaque with the inscription, which mentions a text from the 2nd century AD.
